Movie Review – Nine to Five (1980)

By Manofyesterday

One annoying thing about this film is that I’ve have the song running around in my head ever since I watched it. I actually like the song, but I don’t want it in there all the time! Nine to Five stars Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as office workers who grow tired of their boss’ misogynistic attitude and find a way to turn the tables on him.

I found this film quite entertaining. I thought the leads were charming and funny, and the way they interacted with each other was good. I also liked how some of them changed a little bit throughout the film, most notably Jane Fonda’s character. It’s mostly a comedy but there are some serious issues presented because there is still a lot of inequality in the world, although hopefully there’s not as much as when Nine to Five was made. Through the film they end up being in a position to change things at the company and all of the changes they make are successful but the ending the film didn’t ring true for me.

I’m going to try and not give away too many specific spoilers but if I do then I apologize. The women all celebrate at the end but it feels like a hollow victory because although they pretty much achieved everything they wanted to they didn’t actually get any recognition for it, and they treat the thing that happens to the boss at the end as a bad thing, but I really don’t agree with them on that point. I guess it’s good that they actually did make positive changes, but it’s a shame that they won’t actually get the deserved accolades.

Aside from that it’s a more than decent comedy that kept me engaged so I did enjoy it. There was a part where each of the women fantasized about ways they could kill their boss and those were really great, especially the way that they set up the rest of the film. It was entertaining and I would recommend it.
