I got the Monu Warming Aromatic Mask in my January 2013 GlossyBox and I have to admit I had never heard of the Monu brand prior to this, or really used face masks. As such I was naturally dubious about the sample, but I definitely didn’t want it to go to waste – after all I had signed up to GlossyBox so that I had the chance to try new products and brands.

The annoying thing about this little bottle is that it’s really hard to read the writing on the outside. The contents is a yellowy-grey and the writing is a pale blue which really doesn’t stand out well, so it’s difficult to read about the product and what you have to do with it. It did take a little while to work out that you apply a thin layer of the face mask after toning and cleansing (I must admit, I didn’t bother…) and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. You will then be left with a flawless and fresh complexion – so says the bottle. I’ve heard this so many times before, so again you can understand that I would be sceptical, but I decided to try it any way.

The face mask is made for normal/combination skin, and contains natural clay, lavender and rosemary. I have oily skin but I’ve heard that clay is really good for controlling excess oil. The actual face mask has a strong lavender smell with hints of clay. I couldn’t smell the rosemary. It’s not a nice smell, but that’s coming from someone who has always disliked lavender, and the clay smell reminded me of art lessons in school. The texture is really thick, again, like clay, or maybe even mud or some chocolate which has been left to soften a little. Initially I thought ‘there’s no way that this is going to spread into a light layer’ but then it began to melt slightly, loosening up and becoming super spreadable. I was pleasantly surprised and applied a layer to my face and left it for about 15 minutes, using just a fifth of the sample bottle. In that time it didn’t dry, but it isn’t supposed to, but it did warm up a little. Not massively so, but it was a pleasant enough feeling.

Afterwards I thoroughly washed the face mask from my face with warm water and I was utterly stunned with the result! My face felt incredibly smooth and soft, my complexion looked fresh and clear, but most noticeably, my oil seemed to have disappeared! My skin looked matte and felt exceptionally fresh for hours after using the mask – so much so I went for a couple of days without wearing foundation. I was really impressed with the results. I’m also pleased I have about 4 more uses left of the 30ml bottle, although I can see it being difficult getting the clay out on the last go. I think a tube would have been a better storage solution… Anyway, a 100ml bottle will likely get you about 15 uses and costs £24.95. The bottle recommends using twice weekly so it will last a couple of months, and I think that’s worth the price tag for lovely clear and soft skin! I’m really impressed with this, and it’s definitely become a welcomed addition to my beauty routine. I just wish it smelt nicer!
