There’s nothing to perk you up on a miserable and gray winter day like a lovely gold nail polish. I was drawn to the Max Factor Max Effect Nail Polish like a moth to a flame, but I walked away. I made a vow to myself to cut back on my spending this month, but it was still in my mind. I loved the colour, and the next time I visited Superdrug I saw it again. It caught my eye and resisting it yet again I walked away from it, feeling a little anxious about spending £4.99 on a mini nail polish. It’s half the size of a normal nail polish, but sadly not half the price, but still the color was lovely. On my third visit I couldn’t resist any longer and I applied it as soon as I handed over my money, and was really pleased with how the nail polish came out!

My bottle says I got the Max Factor Max Effect nail polish in ‘Ivory 01′ but I’m not completely sure if this is right because it’s actually a lovely gold color. It’s a shimmery and glistening golden nail polish which gets more vivid with each additional coat. The first coat is slightly transparent, but the second is lovely and smooth and coats the nail very well. I was surprised by this because the mini bottle has a mini nail polish applicator, and I thought it would be fiddly and look streaky on application, but it really isn’t. I have no brush marks at all, and without a top coat my nails feel really smooth. In fact, the smaller applicator actually meant I made less of a mess as I got less nail polish on the skin around my nails.

The fact that this nail polish is smaller means I can carry it around really easily, allowing me to top up my nails when I’m on the go. The only bad thing about this polish is that I do actually have to top up and cover chips quite soon after application. With base and top coat, and even without either, this nail polish does chip incredibly quickly. It’s not just small chips at the top of the nail either, but quite big chips that spread across the entire nail. This happened on the same day as applying the nail polish which is so disheartening, and it’s especially obvious on my index fingers and my thumbs. Top coat does help slightly, but I’ve found that some of them make the polish peel off. Without top/base coat the Max Factor Max Effect nail polish chips off very easily, and I can actually chip the the nail polish off with my thumb nail.

I’d like a nail polish which has a bit more staying power than this one does, but as long as you’re aware that it’ll be short-lived (literally a couple of days only) then this nail polish is lovely. I love the colour, the texture is delightfully smooth, and it dries so quickly! I haven’t experienced any smudging at all, even with base coat, 2 layers of Max Effect and then a top coat. I think that’s impressive! I just wish it was a little bit cheaper and more chip-resistant!
