The smell of Lush has been such a deterrent that I’ve avoided going into a store for quite some time, but I was curious to find out why there was a queue winding around the Liverpool store just before Christmas. So I pinched my nose, ventured inside and found some unusual surprises waiting to be tried. For someone with oily skin the Dark Angels face and body cleanser may be an interesting solution.

The texture of Dark Angels is powdery chunks which smells of mud and charcoal. It isn’t pleasant, but seeing as the ingredients include rhassoul mud, avocado oil and charcoal powder the earthy smell makes sense. Although don’t let this deter you; charcoal powder is perfect for soaking up excess oils, and avocado oil nourishes skin exceptionally well.

However, first, you need to add a little water and make a paste.

The above quantity will cover my T-zone, but for your whole face you will need a pinch the size of 1-2 hazelnuts. Add a little water and blend with your finger and you have a paste. There are some bits which don’t break down, but these are good for exfoliating your skin and cleaning out your pores.

Such an unusual product! It’s not everyday you put a black muddy mixture on your face, or any other part of your body for that matter, but it worked! My skin felt and looked fresh and clear, and my oil was kept at bay for several hours. Now the people in the shop advised to use once or twice a week as it’s quite a strong product, but I’ve used it every other day and haven’t experienced any dryness. In fact, my skin feels soft and nourished thanks to the avocado oil.

The pot is around £6.65 for 100ml which is more expensive than most other high street equivalents, but this one is so different. The ingredients are vegan and fresh, and although there aren’t nice whiffs on application, there definitely are noticeable and credible results. I’d recommend it for sure – just try not to be put off by the smell!
