Kipper : Money Doesn't Buy Championships

By Kipper @pghsportsforum
A couple of days I saw a comment on Twitter, its the same psychobabble, different day, too many people whining that the Pirates haven't traded for bat. You could probably join all of the collective brains together that make these comments and get little beyond a 1st Grade Education. Beyond this you end up with the "Nutting is cheap" fairy band of dip****s.
First off, you can't go out into the Trade Market and buy a player. Ray Shero can sit in a Press Conference and thank Ron Burkle for giving him the "resources", except anyone that can run 2 brain cells together know its PR mush.
The fact is, players cost money and this was a
Sellers market. The St.Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds didn't do anything in the Trade
market either and some of biggest prizes are still on their teams. Common Sense dictates that interest in trading players wasn't detrimental to teams, so the cost for a player like Giancarlo Stanton would've cost the Pirates. That cost would've raped the Pirates in the future for a
Small short term gain that probably doesn't help them this season and certainly doesn't put them over the top.
Trading for short term gain doesn't always make a difference. Look at how the Pittsburgh Penguins pimped the entire Trade Deadline and walked away with the sexiest hookers. They couldn't even make it to the Finals.
Remember Zane Smith? Better yet remember Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Moises Alou who went on to have an All-Star Career ? That career should've been with the Pirates except he was traded for an aging lefty in Smith just to win a
Game or 2 against the New York Mets. If that happened today, Pirates fans would've wet themselves in joy because the Pirates "did something" and complained later because Alou became a stud.
Money doesn't buy championships.. Smart
Decision making does. Daniel Snyder and Jerry Jones have accomplished what in the past 15 years? The Yankees have won how many Championships? The Pittsburgh Penguins have maxed their salary cap since around 2007 and have 1 Stanley Cup to show for it. Teams with far less than others have won Championships.
Use money to keep as much of a Championship teams together as the budget allows, but you need to build that Championship caliber team first. That takes more than money, it takes scouting, chances, a good sense and feel, luck and most importantly.. A plan to stick to through good and bad.
Perhaps the Pirates make the Playoffs this year, perhaps they don't, but it won't be because of Bob Nutting's wallet or killing the farm for a player.. But they'll be closer. Less whining, More
Enjoying!
Oh... How about a 6 man Rotation, Clint?
Let's Go Bucs!
