Kalongkong Hiker is Now a Certified Biker in the Metro

By Thesilentpal @thesilentpal

Last year, I posted a blog about me building a bike and at that time I wasn’t sure if I am going to build a roadie or a mountain bike, as the time went by and I’ve visited different bicycle shops in Metro Manila and nearby places with common interest in cycling I finally get to ride my bike. The planning and buying of spare parts took me 4 months to haggle, find the best spare parts out in the market, learn bike fit and all, and I’m proud to say that I come up with a cross-country bike, commuter or some say hybrid bike.

I am a classic or retro type of person and don’t want brand names all over the place so I looked for a frame with just one color and I want the the silver aluminum alloy one or chrome colored body and I was looking for the old type but have no luck so I tried a MTB one which is cheaper and it’s not theft magnet I may add.

That’s true because for 3 months now whenever I visit some cycle shops around the metro from they always say change my frame and that’s the only thing that I need to change to make it what? To be more good looking? They offer brand names like GT, Giant, Merida, Specialized, Cannondale etc. and yet again I am not a fan of brand names, my frame is okay it is a matter of the riders ability to pedal it to the finish line. I built my bike not to compete but to lessen my carbon footprint and to help our “Mother Nature” for a clean, green and a healthy tomorrow. This is just one of my goal and not to mention to save money for commuting, have a daily work out and to be able to roam around with the use of pedal or leg power which I enjoy a lot, even my lovely wife will agree because if before I will come home 3 to 4 hours commuting via public utility bus or jeepneys now I cut it with an hour or more than an hour of travel time not to mention gas less transportation and she was very happy because we saved time, money and we see each other more often now and plus I have the extra energy to play with the kids.

She knows that I do love to ride my bike, when I was courting her I rode my bike just to see her even her parents don’t want around her, haha, when we were in college I bought my blue Mega Cycle (standard MTB bike or they call it a disposable bike which I don’t agree because you can change its parts and replace it just like the over sized ones though it is limited). This is one way of me helping my mom Jessie a Registrar Officer of my Alma MaterOur Lady of Manaoag College formerly Holy Rosary Academy from saving money and that I could go home anytime I want because you know friends are all over the place and that the public transport is up until 6pm only in the province. Too bad I don’t have a pictures of all my bikes from BMX, to custom kiddie bikes, MTB’s. I wish digital photography was earlier than today, well, it was all in my memory so I know they are all part of my cycling life.

This may not be my first time to ride a bike but this is the start of my cycling adventure around the metro, this is one way of me inspiring others to lessen their carbon foot print, be active and have a healthy mind in body. I am slowly transitioning to a multi-sports  and my dream of joining triathlon is still a dream but I know it is within my fingertips all I need to do today is train harder and master 3 disciplines and these are swimming, biking and running.

Watch out for my bike adventures in here so watch out for my blog post and I will tell stories, the excitement, sleepless nights of building my bike, from purchasing bike merchandise, to searching the Google, reviewing the bike reviews, consulting cycle shops owners, bike mechanics, and my my first long ride scaling Laguna loop etc.

That’s it for now!  Feel free to leave a comment and if yo wanted to join my bike ride and adventure just shoot me an email or PM me. Thanks for reading and have a great day!
