I took the reference photo for this painting while hiking the beautiful Manoa Falls trail on the island of Oahu this past winter:

I was inspired by the bits of light poking through the lacy holes in the leaves, likely nibbled by caterpillars to create this effect. It’s like an elegant parasol overhead!

I used artistic license to make the image colorful, incorporating gold and magenta throughout.

The many delicate holes are irregular shapes and sizes, creating the effect of a randomly-created lace.
