A few months back a new D.C. based mobile dating app became available. It has been spreading to other cities- and seems to be following the best places to meet the hippest and most attractive singles. Hinge sets people up via facebook by allowing users to rate the facebook friends of their facebook friends for attractiveness, which then flags them as date worthy.
Apparently Hinge has compiled a lot of data that points to where the most attractive singles can be found –right now it’s in Washington, DC. Every day the app sends out a list of friends of friends to check out and rate. The information given includes a photo, where they went to school, where they work- and who they know (friends). Users rate the list and if one of the friends also gives them the same score- they get an email introduction from hinge.
Everything old is new again. This is a virtual spin on meeting through friends- except one’s facebook friends may be people that they have never met in person. It’s also possible to check out the facebook pages of folks you may know of, are acquaintances with, or who run with people you find interesting and ask to be friended. If you are, then you get access to all their friends and so on.
It will be interesting to see if folks get more cautious or picky about whom they allow to friend them. After all, a new friend may get interested in someone they already have their eye on and with Hinge, they have easy access to make that connection. It also gives new meaning to the term, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”
