Within the first ten pages of starting this novel, I knew it was not for me. The language was too simplistic, and I knew exactly how the story was going to unfold. I even tested my theory by reading the last 25 pages. While the middle 300 pages may have been exciting, my suspicions are that they were not. Besides, just how exciting can a story be when one can predict the ending before all of the characters make their initial appearance? For the right audience, this could be an enjoyable novel. Not only does it give readers the chance to learn about this very real prisoner-of-war camp in New England, but it also involves star-crossed lovers. I enjoy my stories with more darkness, but there are millions of readers who like the saccharine sweetness of such stories, a la Nicholas Sparks. So, while this is one I refused to spend any more time reading, it may be perfect for someone else.
