Valerie June has recently been added to my rotation of mellow Saturday afternoon relaxation music. Most people have seen her face and those gorgeous locs of hers all over the internet. I've seen her everywhere but never really knew who she was until recently. I saw an article about her on Essence where she was being interviewed and playing some type of banjo or something. Of course, her hair was what initially captured my attention.
I instantly gravitated to Ms. June's fresh and unique sound because of the soulful authenticity in her voice, and not to mention her fingers were going away at that banjo (or, at least that's what I think it was) like I'd never seen. She has influences from folk, rock, blues, gospel and country music, and you can distinctively hear it. The knee-slapping, Working Woman Blues was the song that initially captured my attention; You Can't Be Told and Pushin' Against a Stone are also a couple of my favorites.
You can check out Valerie June's official website for more information on tour dates, album releases and more here.
