I Am the 99 Percent. How About You?

By Lisaannjarrett @bpdblog
  • Over the last 6 months, I have accrued at least $2,000 of medical debt, and most of this time I actually did have insurance.
  • Despite living in the richest country in the world, I cannot pay for the proper medical care for my condition (DBT therapy 1-2x/week for 1 year), so how am I supposed to fully recover from my ailments?
  • I am sick, but I can’t afford my medication.
  • Now that I’m without insurance (true story– different blog for a different day…), I cannot afford ANY therapy.
  • Jobless, broke, and graduating this quarter, there’s a good chance I’ll be homeless around Christmas. Happy Holidays!
  • By the time I’m done with my MEd in a couple of years, my debt caused by school loans will be over $100,000.
  • Looking for jobs in both Seattle AND Chicago has not been very fruitful. I have applied for over 30 jobs in the last 6 months and I haven’t received even ONE callback.
  • My teeth are rotting out of my mind because I haven’t had dental insurance since 2003 and also because I can’t afford to pay for the dentist out of pocket (and the fact that I’ve been taking psych drugs for years hasn’t helped either, as they can cause excess decaying of the teeth. No, really.)
  • Currently being “stuck” in Olympia, Washington rather than Seattle means that there is a seriously short list of companies who are hiring in the area. Moreover, I cannot afford a car that would give me access to more jobs in a variety of different places.
  • I seriously need to buy clothes as not only are the few items I have starting to “fall apart”, but I have also lost 80 lbs in the last year and my clothes don’t fit. I cannot afford to do this, unfortunately, so instead I walk around with very baggy clothes that definitely do not fit properly. I worry about what will happen when my two pairs of jeans “give way”. What will I do then?
It doesn’t matter how smart you are, nor how you always “played by the rules”. All that matters is whether you have a silver spoon shoved up your arse or not. This is proof. My future is not bright. My future is not certain. I am the 99 percent. How about you?
