How to Wear Fashion Weeks Trends, Now

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

Fashion weeks are finished for the year, with recent shows displaying the hottest looks for spring/summer 2023. But why wait until then? Some of the trends for next year are perfect for autumn and winter, so Gerald Wilson from The Founded shares his tips on how to wear next year's trends - now.

Heavy-duty leather

The perfect thing to pair with your statement tights - leather. Leather (and faux-leather) jackets are a wardrobe staple, and have been seen at fashion week for decades, and this year was no different.

Not only were there jackets, but Bottega Venetta had a whole collection entirely made of leather, including plaid shirts, tweed jackets and t-shirts.

Coach had heavy-duty, 'worn' leather jackets, with deep reds and gold details, which is great for this season. Leather jackets and skirts are the ultimate items for transitional dressing, from autumn, to winter, to spring, so they're a great investment piece that will be worn again and again.

Balletcore

Quite the opposite to the heavy leather jackets, many designers featured looks inspired by dance. Ballet pumps are back and were seen not just on the runway but in the audience too, showing that they're ready to wear now, not just next spring/summer.

Pair a wrap cardigan with a tulle maxi skirt and some ballet pumps, and practice your pirouettes for this daytime look. Or for the evening, throw on a leather jacket and some heeled ankle boots to add some edge in contrast to the softness of the ballet-inspired vibe.

80s glamour

At New York fashion week, metallic lamé, pencil skirts, wallpaper florals and shoulder pads were bringing some 80s glamour to the runway. Proenza Schouler had acid green power suits with structured shoulders and wide-leg trousers, and Tom Ford's collection featured crimped hair, sequins and lamé.

Caroline Herrera's New York shows were full of pretty pink and lemon-yellow florals for next season, but try a darker floral print with burnt orange, deep reds, or teal, and it's perfect for autumn and winter, not just for spring.

Colourful power suits have been around for a couple of seasons now but try a wider leg instead of the tapered leg you often see, and you have the perfect nod to the 80s that can be worn in the office, or even dressed up for an autumn wedding guest outfit. Acid green and cobalt blue were featured a lot this year and would be a way to bring some brightness and fun to the season, instead of sticking to the usual autumnal colours.

Sheer

Sheer fabrics were everywhere in the summer, and fashion weeks have shown that they are here to stay. From Skims' sheer mini dresses, to Nensi Dojaka's sheer, tulle strappy dresses. The hyper-feminine looks go hand in hand with the balletcore trend, but you don't have to look like you've just left a dance studio to nail the look. Try a sheer oversized dress over a pair of jeans and a plain t-shirt to add some fun to the simplest outfit. Tuck a sheer shirt into wide leg trousers, or pair a sheer skirt with a chunky jumper and boots for casual look with some edge.
