We all know that long distance anything can absolutely suck.
Whether it’s a long distance relationship, family relationship, or friendship, long distance anything is never easy to say the least.
I knew that in order to move forward with my career, I just had to go with it, and realize that I was going to make so many new friends, and relationships, and that the first part of my move was always going to be the hardest.
So, with that being said, here are 5 ways that I was able to still keep, and maintain a healthy and steady relationship with my friends, even being so far away.
1. Always Stay True To Yourself
Don’t get caught up in a new place, and a new environment. Remember where you came from, and the reason why you moved away from home. Don’t think that just because you moved, you need to drop all of your old friends for new friends, because you don’t live where you use to live anymore. Staying true to yourself is one of the best things that you can do in life.
2. Keep In Touch
Sooner then later, you’re going to need your friends that you grew up with, and had a childhood with. These are the friends that have known you the longest, and whether you like it or not, know you better than you most likely know yourself. Remind your friends that you think about them, even when you may live so far away. Send a postcard, write a letter, or just call them every so often, to remind them that their still a part of you.
3. If You Can Go Back Home & Visit
Nothing says I miss you more than going back to your roots and paying a good ol’ fashion visit home. If you have the budget to do so, pay a visit back home once in a while and take a day, or two to just spend the time with a few of your closest best friends. Remind them that you can still stay in touch, even after all of this time.
4. Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!
Who knows, maybe you have a special occasion coming up. If you can, fly one of, or some of your best friends out to see you for your birthday, or maybe your wedding is coming up, either way, surprising someone that is close to your heart is the best surprise that life brings. Nothing says your my best friend then a simple SURPRISE!
5. Just Be There
When you live so far away from your childhood friends, you never know what they, or your best friend might be going through. This is where the “Keep In Touch” role comes into play again. Being there for your friends is a huge part of having friends. Call them, and have them update you on their life, help them through a hard time that they may be going through, just be there for them.
