How to Do Triyoga: Exploring Sun Salutation, Mudras & Benefits

What is Triyoga – How to do it?

Triyoga is one such divine yoga and is a form of Hatha yoga. This puts more emphasis on beginners’ asanas for the relaxation of the body, pranayama for reducing stress and to activate your mind and soul, and mudras. Mudras give a divine touch to your yoga practice. About 1000 mudras are there that help you to know about the flow of postures. There are various postures in triyoga. Some of the movements and techniques are modified so that all are comfortable in doing these poses.

There are seven levels in Triyoga and each has about five series. These are connected with the five elements, which are the earth, air, fire, water, space and the chakras. The basic level has about 108 postures. Once you learn these postures, you can move on to the next level, which consists of 350 postures. The third level contains 450 postures. One of the basic exercises in Triyoga is balancing. This includes one legged poses and arm balancing. This helps in improving your body flexibility and increases the strength of your body.

Sun salutations or surya namaskara is an important part of Triyoga. It is a series of yoga postures that are practiced from ancient times. Surya namaskara has a divine touch to it and is done early in the morning when sun rises up in the sky. You have to do this in an open space, facing the rising sun. Doing this is very beneficial when you learn Triyoga because it consists of beginner’s yoga poses and also a number of physical poses inter-related to each other.

Sun Salutations in Triyoga:

Here is a step by step description on how to do this yoga asana

  1. Stand straight and hold your hands in prayer pose – Anjali mudra – with your palms together and placed near the chest.
  2. Now stand in Talasana on the yoga mat and raise your hands as you inhale. Stretch your hand backwards from over your head.
  3. Exhale and bend forward and touch your knees with your head if possible. Touch your toes with your hands.
  4. Stretch your right leg backward and your left knee downwards. Stretch backwards with your palms on the ground.
  5. Next you have to put your legs together in a plank position.
  6. Now try to take Ashtanga namaskara by stretching your spine.
  7. Inhale and then stretch forward and bend your torso backwards. This is the Bhujangasana.
  8. Exhale and lean forward, taking Parvatasana pose.
  9. Now bring forward your right leg so that it is between your elbows. Inhale and stretch backwards.
  10. Now bring your left leg also forward and inhale deeply.
  11. Now stretch your body backwards from the waist.
  12. Get back to the Tadasana pose and then Anjali mudra pose.

Do this exercise 5 times in the beginning and then you can increase it according to your capacity.

Different Mudras in Triyoga:

Mudra is an important part of Triyoga. You can sit in various mudras when you do yoga. Here are some of the mudras that you can practice.

Padma mudra:

Sit in the pose of Padmasana and place your hands on your knees. Now move your arms behind your back and hold the wrist of your left hand with your right hand. Exhale slowly and bend your body forward so that your forehead touches the ground. Breathe normally.

Surya mudra:

For this you have to sit in Sukhasana pose or Padmasana pose. Now touch the mound of your thumb with the tip of your ring fingers. Press on the ring finger with your thumb. Keep the other fingers spread out.

Chin mudra:

Sit on the floor in Sukhasana or Padmasana pose and then place your hands on your knees with the palm facing downwards. Join your index finger and the thumbs of both hands.

Surabhi mudra:

Take the pose of Padmasana or Sukhasana. Join your thumb and forefinger in such a way that a circle is formed. Now put the nail of your index finger against your thumb and keep the other three fingers spread out. Your palms should face upwards.

Vayu mudra:

Sit on the yoga mat and take the pose of Padmasana or Sukhasana, whichever is comfortable for you. Keep your body relaxed and fold the index finger of both your hands. Press the index fingers with the base of your thumbs. Keep the other three fingers extended. Your hands must be placed on your knees and eyes kept closed.
