How Often Should You Moisturize Your Skin?

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

As the largest organ of the human body, the average person's skin weighs about 9 pounds. The skin is organized in layers and each layer has it's own job to do.

In order to have smooth, supple skin, the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) should be made up of 20-30% water. Why? The stratum corneum can soak up about 5 to 6 times its own weight in water and swell to three times its original size when soaked in water.

This is what plumps the skin and keeps it looking youthful. So, how often should you moisturize to maintain the right amount of water in the stratum corneum? Let's find out.

What Dries Out the Skin?

There is no cut-and-dried answer for how often to moisturize. Some people naturally have drier skin that will require moisturizing more often. Not to mention there are many other factors that affect how fast your skin loses water. These include:

  • Humidity (or lack thereof) in the air
  • How often you bathe
  • How often you shave or exfoliate
  • Activities such as swimming

Additionally, some areas of your body will need more moisturizing than others. For example, you probably wash your hands far more than the rest of your bodies, which generally means that the skin on your hands dries out faster and will require moisturizing more often than the rest of your body.

The type of moisturizer you choose will also have an impact. Reach for natural skincare solutions for the best results.

A General Moisturizing Guideline

With the caveat that everyone is a little different, here is a basic guideline for how often you should moisturize your body and every part of it.

You should moisturize your face a couple of times a day. A light moisturizer in the morning is great for keeping your face fresh and hydrated during the day. A heavier cream with restorative properties is a great choice in the evening.

Your hands will need to be moisturized several times a day. Frequent handwashing means that this skin dries out faster as the skin's natural oils are being constantly stripped away. Hands also tend to get drier in the winter months because the air is drier. Moisturize as necessary, and keep in mind that this may mean moisturizing your hands every time you wash them.

The rest of your body should be moisturized at least once a day. Right after you bathe is the perfect time. Moisturizing your skin while it is slightly damp helps trap the water in your skin.

How Often Should You Moisturize Your Skin? Until it Feels Right

So, how often should you moisturize your skin? Just before it feels necessary. Keeping your skin moisturized daily will help maintain that glowing, youthful complexion you so desire. The best part is that it isn't hard to do and doesn't require fancy creams or expensive skincare products. Just find a lotion or oil or other moisturizing product that works for you.
