How Far Is Too Far | Keeping A Long Distance Relationship

By Heather Hahn @HeatherHahnn

When it comes to relationship advice, believe me, I am no expert in any way, shape, or form.

Recently, i’ve been getting a ton of questions on what my advice is for maintaining a long distance relationship, and really making it last. I’m sure we’ve all been there, and i’m sure we’ve all been through one at some point in our lives.

The last time I was in a long distance relationship, I was 17, and it was one of those “young love” type of deals. I was so young, and at that time, I hadn’t even realized the full meaning of what it was like to really love someone, and really fall in love.

1. Trust. If There Is No Trust, There Is No Relationship

The overall key to a successful relationship is trust. Don’t let the fear of someone you love being so far away, allow you to let go of the trust you thought you had in them.  In order to be successful in any relationship, there has to be trust from the very beginning, until the very end.

2. Keep In Touch, But Don’t Keep In Touch Too Much

Be sure to keep in contact with each other frequently, but not too frequently to where you both get sick of one another. You also need to give each other a little bit of space, and breathing room. Writing a letter, or sending a post card wouldn’t hurt, depending on how long they are gone for. A phone call every now and then is okay too, but don’t call every second of the day, because that becomes clingy, and that’s what makes the relationship come to an end.

3. Visit Each Other Every Once In A While

If your partner is away for a long period of time, visit each other once in a while, it’s a good idea to keep in contact, but personal face to face contact is always better. If you have the budget, plan a trip to see each other.

4. The Strongest 3 Words: ‘I Love You’

There are no stronger 3 words other then ‘I Love You‘. It’s important to remind one another how much you love each other, while you’re separated for the time being. Even the simple words of ‘I hope you have a great day today‘, can really change someones mood, and really make them feel good.

5.  Send Cute Little Care Packages To Each Other In The Mail

While I was living in San Francisco by myself for college, there were periods of time, where I just felt so alone, and sad, eventually I started developing really bad panic attacks, because of it. I’ll never forget the one day I was waiting for the bus to come, it was pouring rain outside, I had no umbrella, and some man had walked past me that same morning, and took my wallet right out of my hand, and ran with it, while I was getting coffee. Meanwhile that had made my 8 hour shift at work, awful. When I got off of work, I came home to a care package at the door from my mom. It was filled with snacks from Ohio, my favorite movies, and just simple notes to remind me how much she loved me. I’ll always remember going in my bedroom, and just crying, because that really made the end to my miserable day, and reminded me how much I was loved.

Even a simple package with a few basic things, can change someones entire day around.

I hope this helps some of you, remember that long distant relationships are possible!
