This post will focus on each Montreal Canadiens player's ability to make successful plays while in possession of the puck. Events used in this calculation include; passes, dekes, shots, and dump-ins. A successful offensive-touch can be described as any successful attempted pass, deke, shot-on-net, or dump-in. Consequently, any failed attempt at any of these events would constitute an unsuccessful offensive-touch. Only even-strength events were used in this calculation.
Players with more FAILED offensive-touches give the puck away more often than players with more successful o-touches. By extension, those players with more successful o-touches create more offense.
HOW TO READ THE GRAPH
- The higher a player's bubble is, the more FAILED offensive-touches they contributed per-minute of ice time.
- The further to the right a player's bubble is, the more SUCCESSFUL offensive-touches they contribute per-minute of ice-time.
- The bigger a player's bubble is, the higher that player's overall offensive-touch success-rate success-rate=(successful attempts)/(total attempts)
A player whose bubble appears in the bottom-right of the graph contribute more successful and FEWER give-aways than a player whose bubble appears in the top-left of the graph.
DEFENSEMEN
Jarred Tinodi has contributed the most failed offensive-touches per-minute played; followed by PK Subban and Nathan Beaulieu. That's said, in Subban's case it's important to remember that the more a player has the puck, the more often they will turn the puck over.
Josh Gorges has produced the fewest failed offensive-touches; followed by Francis Bouillon and Andrei Markov. Subban has contributed the most successful o-touches, followed by Beaulieu, Gorges and Markov. The fewest successful o-touches per-minute have been contributed by the recently demoted Tinordi.
Expressed simply, Tinordi has turned the puck over more often than any other Montreal defensemen, while Gorges has produced the fewest give-aways. Subban maintains puck-possession more often, while Tinordi has produced the fewest successful puck-possession events.
CENTRES
Tomas Plekanec has contributed the most failed offensive-touches per-minute played; followed by Lars Eller. Eller however, has also produced the most successful offensive-touches.
Ryan White has contributed the fewest successful o-touches among Habs centremen.
WINGERS
Recent call up Michael Blunden has contributed the most failed offensive-touches per-minute played; followed by Max Pacioretty and Brendan Gallagher.
Another recent call-up Patrick Holland has produced the fewest failed offensive-touches; followed by Daniel Briere, Travis Moen, and Michael Bournival.
Bournival has also contributed far-and-away the most successful o-touches per-minute played; followed by Prust, Holland, and Pacioretty. The fewest successful o-touches per-minute have been contributed by the recently injured Briere.
