Grand Union Canal Race 2017 – Updates

The 25th edition of the revered Grand Union Canal Race 2017 kicked off this morning at 6:00 am with a 107 starters.This 145 mile non-stop race from Gas Street Basin, Birmingham, along the way-marked Grand Union Canal Towpath to Little Venice, has a 45 hour cutoff.

CP's along the way provide aid, refreshments and support to the runners and for those unfortunate enough not to be able to continue, a place to retire or be retired. Runners have to reach the Navigation Bridge (No 64) checkpoint at 70.5 miles within 19 hours to avoid being pulled from the race.

Race organiser Keith Godden posted a list of people through CP6 and it appears that Sergey Ionov is now leading. CP6, Paul Beechey is in second and Matt Giles is lying third. Catherine Simpson is the womens leader, 4th place overall.

The race is held with the kind permission of British Waterways who also offer trophies for 1st Man and 1st Lady and a certificate and memento for each finisher.
