Terrebonne Parish Council has voted to ban sagging pants as defined as “Appearing in public view while exposing one’s skin or undergarments below the waist is contrary to safety, health, peace and good order of the parish and the general welfare”. This is simple ridiculous, since when does the government institute an office dress-code for residence of an area? Why are they wasting their time on this when there are real problems out there? Also what do they hope to actually accomplish with a ban on sagging pants. Apparently it is necessary for safety, health, peace and good order; at least according to the ordinance.
So what safety or health concerns could there be with sagging pants? Are they have a epidemic of people being hospitalized for tripping when their pants fall down? What peace concerns are there with sagging pants? Are sagging pants leading to brawls and civil unrest? How do sagging pants effect the good order of the parish? Are they causing riots or something?
This is complete government over-reach. The government should not dictate dress-code for the populace. We already have indecency laws and if somebody is exposing themselves then charge them with indecency. But if you can’t charge them for that then the government should be completely unconcerned with your style of dress.
