Job Description:

The GIS Analyst reports to the GIS Program Lead. This position provides GIS support, data management and analysis to fRI staff, programs, and associations. You will work with researchers to facilitate sound data management practices and to undertake analysis processes.

The successful applicant will support the GIS Program by:

  • Creating , maintaining and documenting spatial and non-spatial data
  • Performing GIS data quality control
  • Creating, maintaining and improving GIS scripts, models, tools and workflows
  • Performing geospatial analysis to solve both common and unique problems on vector or raster data
  • Providing support for cartographic design and high quality map production
  • Handling data and map requests, and
  • Providing training and technical support to researchers

The selected individual should be comfortable working for extended periods of time in front of a computer workstation in an office environment.

Anticipated start date is November 2014.

  

Essential Job Qualifications:

  • Technical diploma in GIS from a reputed educational institute and an applicable undergraduate degree or diploma
  • 3 to 5 years work experience using GIS in spatial analysis and data management in a natural resources field
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to translate research questions and needs to solutions
  • Strong programming skills for modelling and customizing tools and workflows using Python, Model Builder, Visual Basic and/or R
  • Ability to convert data from multiple sources and be able to work with GPS data
  • Proficient with ArcGIS 10.x desktop software and extensions
  • Experience using Microsoft Access and Excel for data management
  • Experience in Microsoft Access database design and management to manage all aspects of data collection, querying, summarization, and distribution
  • Familiarity with GPS and mobile technology and a keenness to learn about other field equipment and devices for data collection
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills to deal with multiple ongoing projects, shifting priorities and working with tight deadlines
  • Highly motivated and able to work both independently and with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to train and provide technical support to GIS users
  • Strong oral, written, and electronic communication skills
  • Eligible to work in Canada

Salary:

$50,000 to $58,000 annually, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
