The Braves and Pirates both turn to hot 24-year-old starters in the finale of their three-game series Sunday afternoon at Turner Field, with Alex Wood set to go for Atlanta and Gerrit Cole ready for Pittsburgh.
Wood's last three starts have been arguably his best of the season so far, as he's gone at least seven innings in all of them while allowing just three earned runs combined. In those 22 innings, the lefty has a 1.23 ERA and has struck out 11 batters while walking just four.
Cole returns to Turner Field for the first time since Sept. 23 of last year, where he helped the Pirates clinch a postseason berth after throwing seven two-run innings and striking out eight batters. Over his last three starts, Cole has posted a 0.81 ERA (22 1/3 innings, two earned runs) while striking out 26 batters and walking only three.
Three things to know for this game
• Wood's first college start for Georgia came against UCLA and Gerrit Cole back in 2011, when Cole was a well-regarded prospect and already a projected first-round pick. Wood got the win after throwing seven innings and allowing one run with 11 strikeouts. Cole threw seven innings, allowed three earned runs and struck out 12 while getting the loss.
• Jace Peterson is expected to be back in the starting lineup at second base for the Braves after sitting out the first two games of the series with a bruised left thumb.
• As usual, Chris Stewart will be behind the plate with Cole for his seventh consecutive start. Manager Clint Hurdle said earlier in the season that he wasn't a big fan of personal catchers but now says when something like this is working "you take advantage of it."
