Matt Harvey is winless in his last two starts despite holding opposing hitters scoreless over 15 innings combined. Harvey, one of baseball's top pitchers, looks to capture that elusive sixth win of the 2015 campaign against A.J. Burnett and the Pirates on Saturday at PNC Park.
Harvey is in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, but he has returned to dominant form. The 6-foot-4 right-hander boasts a 1.98 ERA, a 0.91 WHIP and 56 strikeouts this year. Harvey won't be the only shining starter taking the mound, though.
Burnett, brandishing the second-best ERA in the Major Leagues, seeks his fourth win of the season. Manager Clint Hurdle joked that Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth may have been found in Pittsburgh, but he gives Burnett a lot of credit for his transformation as a starter. Hurdle said it's fun to see Burnett, previously a power pitcher, be more conscientious on the mound.
"I really think he's focused on being the best A.J. he can be one pitch at a time. And I don't know how many times he's ever done that before," Hurdle said.
Three things to know about this game:
• As if the Mets' rotation -- one of baseball's best -- needed any more help, it appears they'll get some sooner rather than later. Instead of demoting 22-year-old right-hander Noah Syndergaard, the Mets have decided to go with a six-man rotation. That sixth man -- Dillon Gee -- is expected to be with the team on Saturday in Pittsburgh. The presence of Gee, who was placed on the disabled list in early May, will provide opportunities of increased rest for fellow starters like Harvey and 42-year-old Bartolo Colon.
• Pirates right fielder Gregory Polanco returned to the lineup Friday night, hitting seventh in the batting order. The primary leadoff or No. 2 hitter this season, Polanco took advantage of the opportunity, ripping an RBI single. Though don't expect Polanco to jump back to his previous spot in the order. Hurdle said Friday that the 23-year-old will be down in the order "a while," mostly because of how well Josh Harrison has hit at the top of the order.
• Harrison will try to take his hitting streak to double digits on Saturday. The 27-year-old has gone 19-for-39 during the streak, bumping his batting average from .173 to .255.
