Fun in the Kitchen?! - Fixing a Dry & Flaky Scalp

By Makeupguineapig @MakeUpGuineaPig
I can’t say that I recall always having a dry and itchy scalp, but the past year or two I have found it to be quite the nuisance. Naturally I also battle with the flakes now and then as well. No matter what dandruff shampoos I tried – and the cruelty free varieties seem few and far between – the problem still persisted. Especially the itchiness…until the day I raided the cupboard and tried a totally natural alternative. My secret cure? Nothing more than a bit of Olive Oil! Yup. That’s it. Straight ole fashioned olive oil. Nothing fancy, nor pricey or difficult to find. Just good old oil on the scalp!

My hair can tend toward the oily side at the roots – though it’s dry as hell everywhere else. That made it a bit intimidating to put straight-up oil on my scalp. I figured I had little to lose as it would eventually wash out if everything took a horrible turn. So one night before washing my hair…and that’s key. Definitely apply the oil to a dry scalp right before washing your hair. I put some olive-y goodness direct into my palm. I simply dip the fingers from my other hand into my little oil-pool then massage the oil directly onto my noggin. I also will just rub the oil between my palms and target the roots a bit as well, though it’s harder to reach the scalp this way. I tend to alternate applying it both ways until I feel I have covered a decent amount of my head, but the hair is not saturated. I don’t have the patience for a precise application and I find it totally effective just generally hitting the various regions of my scalp. Once that’s complete, I tie my hair up with a clip and let my head marinate for maybe 5-10 minutes. Then it’s washing time!

I wash my hair as I normally would. Nothing special. Nothing fancy needed, just my regular routine. I don’t find my hair even remotely different when I get out of the shower, other than the lack of itchy flakiness on my cranium…well, and my hair is clean! I feel like my hair is also in slightly better condition, but my main purpose is eliminating scalp issues. I do this pretty much every time I wash my hair, which is maybe every 2 to 3 days. It’s something that I definitely notice when I forget.

Though I have only tried olive oil, I’m sure any oil will work. Next time you’re feeling a bit itchy, or notice a bit of summertime snow on your shoulders, give it a try and let me know if it helps. Olive Oil has definitely been a must have for my scalp over the past 6 months!
