What are the dangers of silicone breast implants?
A breast implant is a prosthesis used in cosmetic surgery to enhance breast size or improve the shape. It is also used in reconstructive surgery to “rebuild” a breast following a mastectomy.

The most used are those implants filled with silicone gel. Now these implants were the subject of great controversy and their use has been limited following a decision of the Food and Drug Administration.

Like any foreign body that enters the body, the breast implant also has risks. Besides the generic risks associated with surgery such as hematoma or intolerance to anesthesia, there are other specific risks such as perforation of the implant and release its contents into the body causing infections the contraction of scar tissue around the implant causing hardening and acute pain in the treated breast, the deterioration of the quality of the implant over time which results in a breast asymmetry, etc.

A study conducted at the Mayo Clinic in the US found that 25% of women with breast implants have local complications within five years of implantation, and are seen obliged to undergo further surgeries.

Another Canadian study of 147 women who underwent implantation of these prostheses showed that 51% of them had at least one additional surgery related to implants. Of these 51% women, 49% had one surgery after implantation, 23% have had two, 11% have had three, and 17% have had four. Because of these complications, 40% of these women have decided to undergo another operation to remove their implants permanently.

This, not to mention the impact on the physical and psychological health that such succession of surgical operations can have on a woman who suffers.
