The World Cup in South Africa has ended! Iniesta’s moment of magic provided Spain with a deservedly triumph of world football. Being half Spanish I was very pleased with the result. I believe it was not just a historic moment for Spain winning their first world cup but also for football. Many critics have stated that the World Cup will hold a long legacy in South Africa and provide the building blocks for African aspirations in the future of football. Also, FIFA muttered that the tournament would be one of glamour and fascination. But as an honest football fan, who has watched his favourite team Charlton Athletic fall through relegations in recent years, I do not believe that South Africa will be a tournament to remember for the decades. We had the usual theatrics of the French, the failures of the Italians, and the usual passionless which is the English players. But the tournament did not vibe the excitement from which the tournaments of 1998 or 2006 had produced. The major stars did not perform, the stadiums were half empty and as a spectacle I had expected so much more but just felt left empty and slightly disappointed. In comparison, I had enjoyed Euro 2008 far more greatly! But it’s over, and now everyone’s attention will turn to the domestic seasons!
The new football season will kicks offs in little less than a month’s time. Teams from all divisions are building their teams with new signings and there will be plenty of movement between now and by the time the new season kicks off. There is a lot to look forward to. How will Tottenham do in the Champions League with Harry at the helm? Who win the title, Man Utd? Chelsea? Arsenal? Will Man City eventually make the top 4? And what will happen to Liverpool? I believe they have a very good manager in Hodgson! Who will be your run away favourites for the Championship? I believe Leicester could be a surprise package at the right end by the end of the season? Will Leeds continue to strife back towards the Premier League? And will leagues 1 and 2 provide the same excitement of promotion chasing and relegation battles that they did of last season? Only time will tell...
