Even the Dog Shied Away from Him

Mental illness is not a behavioral choice. It is a chronic disease like diabetes. Even though schizophrenia affects 1 percent of the population, nobody has found the cause of this illness yet. Researchers and scientists believe that environmental and maybe genetic factors are responsible.

Schizophrenia is a beast. So are Bipolar and Depression. Mental illness tests relationships and pursues its victim with a vengeance. People are loath to speak about mental illness. Far too many young people end up in cemeteries instead of on surfboards or on dance floors. Some family members flee when they can.

Even our dog shied away because David took her for too many long walks. The dog often hid under the coffee table in the living room and there were times when I wished I could join her.
