Summer is coming to a close and my heart is ready for the winter months, for shedding of my old skin and creating warmth from within. Here are photographs of some moments of summer.
Adventure.
The summer solstice.
Yoga makes me brave.
A chocolate and salted caramel tart.
It was also the summer that my ultra cool girlfriend Lex introduced me to longboarding.
She has also introduced me to boats, Boursin cheese (it’s like cheese ice cream!) and the tent life.
If you are not a long time reader of my blog, let me introduce you to Devaki, or Deki as I call her (pronounced dey-ki). She is my mom’s best friends little girl. She is 12 years old. She and her little brother Ishaan and her new baby sister are like sparkling stars in my life.
Deki and I made a promise that we will never ignore another sunset again. On this particular evening, we decided to take a walk through my neighbourhood to a little spot to enjoy the beautiful dusky skies.
Morning hush.
My bedroom. So good to be home!
My man on a boat!
The beautiful Shushwap.
Longboards & love.
We riiiideee.
We finally got to start using some of our wedding gifts. I am so grateful for the small moments I get to share with my husband, and for these gifts that make it even more special.
This was one of the most beautiful moonrises I have seen, the day after the full moon of August and the Guru Purnima.
Tender moments.
Flying lessons.
Dessert for dinner one night!
Small veggie patch.
Showcasing one of my favorite nail polishes of the summer.
When my cousin D came to visit.
Morning light and my new daisy pajamas.
I started taking daily portraits of my husband.
Me: Do you like that I take your photo every day:
Him: Well, it’s pretty annoying but…I guess it makes me feel cherished too. Annoyed and cherished.
I spent so much time with this cuddly ball of adorable and felt grateful for how much goodness she has bought into our lives.
Helping me pick out a good juice detox.
Walking hand in hand with my grandma, who stayed with my parents for the summer.
Backseat siblings.
Group nap.
For our reception, I think I wore more make up than I ever have in my life. But I enjoyed the sparkles on my eyes.
My sweet grandmother letting her hair dry in the warm summer breeze.
Tender moments.
Lots of flying across Canada.
My husband took me to see LANA DEL REY in concert. It was so very wonderful being there. I sang along to every song and wore flowers in my hair.
Mornings in Kamloops.
This guy, 7 years old and so, so funny.
Me: Ishaan, do you know what Yoga is?
Ishaan: Yep. It’s solid carbon dioxide.
—
Me: Ok guys, I have a challenge for you, I want you to name ten body parts that have only three letters in them! Go!
Devaki (12 years): Um…eye, toe, ear…
Ishaan: Vagina.
—
Me: Have you ever cried at school?
Ishaan: Yeah, sometimes. But only when I really need to.
Me: Like what?
Ishaan: Like, if I lose a toy.
Me: Tell me about a time you lost a toy
Ishaan: Well one time, I bought my lucky dice to school, but it turned out to be my unlucky dice after all.
Me: Why is that?
Ishaan: Because I lost it. First I buried it in the rocks. Then I realized it had magic powers. And I lost it.
Me: ?!?!

We were playing a memory game where you start the sentence “We are going on a picnic and I am going to bring a ….sandwich” and then the next player says “We are going on a picnic and I am going to bring a sandwich and….an apple.” etc etc.
Ishaan: We are going on a picnic and I am going to bring an ice cube.
Devaki: We are going on a picnic and I am going to bring an ice cube and a tuna sandwich.
Ishaan: You cannot come.
—
Ishaan: Hey Maachi, can you read that noodles book for me?
Me: Noodles book?
Ishaan: Yeah! Your noodles book.
Me: What do you mean my noodles book?
Ishaan: This one! *Brings me a book on numerology*
Me: Ohhhh, numerology!
—
Ishaan: *hears a song on the TV* Yeah, I could play that on the piano if I had the recipe.

Playing outside with the girls. Babygirl’s first time on the grass!
Deki: My mom kept asking me if I was mentally prepared for the new baby and I said yes. But I don’t think my ears were physically prepared for the new baby.
—
Me: So what did you learn at school?
Deki: Well, I learned how to fall if I get shot.
Me: Ok. Wait…what?! is this what they teach you at school?!
—
Me: The heart is made of 4 chambers called artia and ventricles. So basically they are like four pockets inside the heart that
Deki: Is one of those pockets for love?
Me: *Dreamy eyes*

And now I am back on the emerald island to begin my final year as a medical student.
In 8 months we will be doctors. Isn’t that the wildest thing? It’s been an amazing but challenging journey and I am excited for my final year and look forward to sharing my reflections of 6 years of medicine with you. I begin this year on my surgical rotation and I am learning a lot every day.
So….what kind of doctor do you think I should be? :D It’s decision making time, people! I need your help.
Thank you for letting me share little pieces of my life with you,
Malavika
