Colour
You are actually looking for the lack of colour to find a diamond in its purest form. A chemically pure and perfect diamond has no hue and is colourless. Just like a drop of water. So the more colourless it is, higher is its value. The grading system followed for colour is D-Z. D being the most colourless and increasing presence of colours would take the grade closer and closer to Z. The distinction between the different grades is really mild and a common man would not be able to distinguish between the 2 grades. You need an expert to know the actual value of the diamonds. We come across this feature when we are checking the diamond pendant sets.

Cut
A perfect cut for the diamond means that it would reflect the maximum amount of light. When this happens, that reflects on you and you shine like a star. Cut of the diamond refers to the symmetry, proportioning and polish of the diamonds. Evaluation of the cut is done by experts who then grade the cut of the diamond based on its match with the set benchmark.
Clarity
Clarity of the diamonds refers to the presence of certain characteristics in the diamonds known as “inclusions” and surface defects known as blemishes. The size, number, colour, orientation, relative location, and visibility of inclusions can affect the overall clarity of the diamonds. The clarity grade is awarded to the diamond based on its appearance under 10 times the magnification. Higher the clarity, higher the value and price of the diamonds.

Carat
Carat measures the mass of the diamond. 1 carat=200 milligrams. A 1 carat diamond weighs 100 points. Diamonds come in all shapes and sizes and colours and clarity. A large diamond with the same colour, cut and clarity of a small diamond will definitely be of a higher value as such a diamond would be rare. However a large diamond is not necessarily as beautiful. If the cut or clarity is not good enough, the diamond would still not be worth buying.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. The more you learn about these, the better prepared are you to buy the diamonds.
