Crabtree & Evelyn recently introduced a new bath & body collection to its already extensive range, Verbena & Lavender de Provence.

The Verbena & Lavender de Provence collection is permanent to Crabtree & Evelyn and is housed under the Fruits and Botanicals range of products which features other collections such as Avocado, Olive & Basil, Citron, Honey & Coriander, Jojoba and Goat’s Milk.

For something new and with the ideas of freshness, uplift and rejuvenation in mind, Crabtree & Evelyn headed towards Provence, the heart of the perfume world. There, Provence’s beautiful Lavender and crisp Lemon Verbena stole their hearts and are now interpreted as a “sunshine-filled lemon” scent.

I agree with Crabtree & Evelyn’s scent description – there is indeed a lemony-lilt to the fragrance but rather than a straight-up lemon-citron fragrance, it has a herbaceous note to it. The usual crisp bite of lemon is further tempered by soothing lavender which mellows the fragrance a good bit. If you’re looking for a clear-cut lavender scent, this is not it. You’d find that in the Lavender collection under Crabtree & Evelyn’s Floral range. 

The combination of the ever-so-slight citrus with a soft herb and a soothing floral makes this one of the more unique scents I’ve come across recently in a bath and body collection. I like herbaceous scents but I’m really not a great fan of citrus so I’m rather happy that the citrus note acts more like an accent, rather than the main star. Verbena & Lavender de Provence isn’t overtly feminine but neither is it masculine (Lavender often reads as masculine on my skin). I think it makes for a good scent to envelope yourself in after a long, hot day out. Turn on the hot shower and inhale.

Speaking of which, let’s take a closer look at the Bath and Shower Gel in the collection.

It comes packaged in a clear plastic bottle with a screw-top cap. I generally prefer flip-top caps for shower products but the saving grace here is that instead of a gaping opening, there is a smaller spout which can help control the flow of the product. And this feature is important, seeing how the texture of the sage-coloured shower gel itself is a little on the runny side.

This would be great to use with a bath lily or scrub-gloves or poured into a hot bath. In comparison to some shower gels in the other bath and body collections, I find that the scent gently lingers on skin for quite a while, especially if you hop into an air-conditioned environment post-shower.

Crabtree and Evelyn’s Hand Therapies are one of its best-selling items and I suspect that this will find many fans with its fresh herbaceous scent packed with ultra-conditioning agents such as Shea Butter, Macadamia Nut Oil, Vitamins C and E. The Hand Therapy in the Verbena & Lavender de Provence Collection is packaged slightly differently from other Hand Therapies I’ve come across – it is in a soft plastic squeeze tube unlike others that are usually packaged in metal tubes. I’m not sure if this is a permanent packaging change but if it is, I’ll be very happy. The metal tubes often get out of unpresentably out-of-shape and when you’re nearing the end of the tube, it can be quite a challenge to squeeze out the hand cream. With the soft squeezy plastic tube, that won’t be an issue anymore.
