Christmas Countdown Gift Idea #15: Get Your Friends and Family FIT – for Free

By Joanna Koh

Hello! I love keeping fit and working out, and had originally wanted to write this post recommending a gym and site where you could buy some workout gear. However, I thought about it more and felt that instead of spending lots of $$$$ looking good and working out in a swanky place, we can have a work out absolutely free!

This Christmas, as a present, why not bring your loved one out for some time together while getting fit. After all, time is a gift, and if you haven’t given them enough time this year, it’s not too late now.

Here are some ideas on where to go:

The MacRitchie Tree Top Walk

Cross over the thick canopy in MacRitchie by a 250m long suspension bridge. Getting to the bridge itself is where the work out comes in! You’ll have to walk either 4.5km from the MacRitchie Reservoir Park, or 2.5km from Venus Drive Carpark. The climb up to the entrance of the one-way bridge is steep, wear good shoes and bring lots of snacks!

Open 9am-5pm on weekdays, and 8.30-5pm on weekends & public holidays.

Spanning 2.2kms each way, enter the boardwalk via Changi Point Ferry Terminal. A two-way trip up and down this trail will allow you to indulge in a delicious breakfast at the Changi Village Food Centre.

Challenge Each Other At The Southern Ridges

If you are attempting the full length of this trail, you’ll need at least 3-5hours of walking time. I suggest you leave the car at home for the day and take the bus, as you’ll end up far from the start point. If you read the Nparks guide, Route A suggests walking starting from Mount Faber and ending at Kent Ridge. I would suggest the opposite, because to finish at Mount Faber, you’ll feel the sense of accomplishment, standing atop the hill overlooking Sentosa and the city. It’s also much closer to food joints and shopping centres Vivocity and Harbourfront, so looking for nosh and heading home is a breeze.

There are so many more parks and destinations within Singapore that I could tell you about, like Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Pulau Ubin, Chek Jawa, Gardens By The Bay, Gardens East and many more. I really don’t understand when Singaporeans complain that they’re bored or have nothing to do! Lets get off our butts this Christmas (or this weekend!) and spend some quality time with friends and family outdoors instead of in a mall!
