Canon Envirothon Environmental Competition

The North American Canon Envirothon is taking place this week at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. This event is North America’s largest environmental competition for high school students and has been held since 1988 to inspire teenagers to pursue careers in natural resources and increase awareness of the environment.

Each year during the spring, students from all across the United States and Canada that are passionate about the environment face off in regional Envirothon competitions. The winning teams from each region are then invited to come to the main Envirothon witch is a 5 day event where teams of five students are challenged on their knowledge of various environmental issues including soils, land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and a specially selected current environmental issue (this year the topic is salt and fresh water estuaries). Students from the first place team each receive $5,000 and the top ten teams receive Canon scholarships. In all there will be 270 students from all across North America challenging for the title.
