The Boston Bruins and goaltender Tuukka Rask shut out the Penguins, 3-0, in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final tonight at Consol Energy Center.
Rask made 29 saves.
Boston got the only goal of the first period when David Krejci's shot from the slot trickled in off of the inside of Penguins goaltender Tomas Vokoun's pads. The goal extended Krejci's playoffs lead in points to 18.
There was no scoring in the second period, which was punctuated by a couple of incidents.
At 1:32, the Penguins' Matt Cooke was given a major penalty for checking from behind and a game misconduct. He could face a suspension from the NHL for his hit that sent Boston's Adam McQuaid into the boards behind the Bruins' net.
Tempers flared a few more times in the period, culminating with a fight between the Penguins' Evgeni Malkin and Boston's Patrice Bergeron at center ice after the buzzer that marked the end of the period.
Krejci scored again at 4:04 of the third period. A shot by Nathan Horton got flipped high in the air above Vokoun. It landed at the goalie's feet, and Krejci battled through the checking of the Penguins' Kris Letang to bat the puck into the net to make it 2-0.
Horton scored on a rebound into an open net at 7:51 of the third to make it 3-0.
Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Monday night at Consol Energy Center.
