Book Review – Y: The Last Man Book 1 by Brian K. Vaughan & Pia Guerra

Y: The Last Man is set in a world where every man dies, every man that is except Yorick who, along with his pet monkey, is the last man alive. As the surviving female population attempt to rebuild the infrastructure Yorick sets out to find his girlfriend, who is in Australia. It’s not so simple though as he’s pursued by a number of groups all who have different agendas.

This has been something of a holy grail for me. I’ve been after it for a number of years but the deluxe hardbacks always proved to be hard to track down whenever I had the spare cash to get them. I was browsing a bookshop the other day and saw this, and thankfully they’ve started to put out the paperbacks. I believe the next one is due in March ’15 so I’ll be able to complete the sage over the next couple of years. I’m glad to say that it lived up to my expectations.

I loved how Vaughan builds the world and shows how different people react, and also shows how much imbalance there still is between the genders. Yorick is an entertaining protagonist as he acts impulsively and that instantly endears you to the supporting characters as you can feel how infuriating they must be. There are some cool plot revelations, and I like how the origin of the accident is a bit of a mystery, but there are enough hints given that you can piece together a theory.

Great characters, strong plot, a damned entertaining story and I’m intrigued to see where it goes next, especially with the way this volume left off. I can’t wait until the next volume comes out.
