Revelations isn’t something I enjoyed reading. I’ve heard a lot about Straczynski’s run on Spider-Man and we’ll get to some more of that in another post, but Revelations collects a few issues that feels like it’s in the middle of the run and there’s no cohesive thread running through it, so perhaps in the wider context it would be a satisfying read but on its own it didn’t do anything for me.
It was also written about the time of the 9/11 attacks and obviously it was a very emotional time, so perhaps it’s unfair of me to criticize the writing of the first part of the story, which follows the efforts to clean up the area of the crumbled twin towers, but I have to give my honest opinion and it seems like it was a mistake to have let reality interfere with fiction like that. Reading it now feels so melodramatic and out of place. The scenes of Dr. Doom and Magneto shedding a tear are way over the top I mean, come on, they’ve done way worse things than this, and I feel that including the tragedy in Marvel’s NYC, which has faced far worse threats on a weekly basis, undercuts the actual tragedy of the moment.
