Sunday’s night breaking news that the Football Association has identified West Bromwich Albion as their first choice candidate to be the next England manager shocked most football fans who had expected bookmakers’ firm favorite Harry Redknapp to be offered the job. The shock announcement surprised even seasoned football commentators who took to micro-blogging website Twitter to voice their reaction to the move for 64-year-old Hodgson.
Stand up & be counted time: I’m backing Hodgson. He doesn’t have Redknapp’s popularity with players/fans but he knows international football

Hope Roy Hodgson is given a chance. His pedigree goes back to the Venables/Howe/Robson era. Shouldn’t be punished for not being H Redknapp.

First thought this morning is sympathy for Redknapp. Will brush off his disappointment in public but bound to hurt

Every time Harry Redknapp is compared to Brian Clough an angel loses her wings.

I might have gone with Pardew. He’s arrogant enough to deal with the big players, is OK tactically and would enjoy limelight

Roy Hodgson has a terrible habit of getting good jobs in bad circumstances.

Like Hodgson but was shocked the few times I went to his Anfield press conferences how brittle he was under mild questioning

One thing I will say in Roy’s defence: he has impeccable taste in television. Like me, he thought The Trip was self-indulgent tripe.
