Beauty Event: BAFTA’s 2013

By Bbeautylove @bbeautylove

While there was a lot of black gowns gracing the red carpet last night at the BAFTA’s, there were some great make up looks adding color and drama to a somewhat somber night in terms of fashion. Helen Mirren turned up with pink hair, Eddie Redmayne got food poisoning and Bradley Cooper looked like the most beautiful specimen on the planet…. But back to the make up!

There appeared to be two main camps (again? I get sick of saying that!) and surprise surprise it was the Old Hollywood Red Lip and the dramatic Screen Siren Smoky Eye.

So lets take a look at who did it best…

In the Red Corner

Staying true to Hollywood’s dictation of red = glamour the stars used this bright shade to draw a contrast to their outfits. Whether perking up an all black ensemble like Thandie Newton and Laura Whitmore or adding a color contrast to bold shades like Marion Cotillard in her yellow Dior dress and Jessica Chastain in an azure blue Roland Mouret number. Special mention has to go to Paloma Faith who rocked her classic look up by adding thick, ruler straight brows into the mix. Magic!

Smokin’ Hot

Keeping it dark and sultry, the majority of stars opted for a heavy smoky eye. Gemma Arterton, Judi Dench, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lawrence, Caroline Flack and more all opted for drama around the eyes. Some winged it out, some kept it soft and round others used so much kohl, any more and they would have resembled a panda but it all worked so well and added somewhat of a British Rock’n'Roll edge to the proceedings.

The Inbetweeners

There were also some ladies who were gently straddling both groups, with dark definition around the eyes but also a soft pop of pinky red on the mouth. Prime cases include Jennifer Garner and Amy Adams who looked stunning and a special nod to my favorite look of the night, Anne Hathaway who opted for a more fuchsia toned lip which looked beautiful with her Burberry gown.

So all in all nothing too wow or crazy (fingers crossed for the Grammy’s) but a great night for classic looks used to work with fashion and not against it.

Keep checking back for my Grammy’s round up going up later today!
