Battling Bucs : Your 2014 Pittsburgh Pirates???

By Kipper @pghsportsforum
Assuming each major league franchise was forced to build its team with only the pieces it originally brought in what might the current Pittsburgh Pirates look like? It is an interesting question that on its face is of course impossible to answer. Given these circumstances teams would undoubtedly draft differently and promote their players differently but still it allows for an interesting thought experiment. Just what kind of team would the Pirates have right now?
To keep this exercise relatively simple I'm limiting this to current players who have seen at least some time in the major leagues. This means no bringing back players who last played in 2011 or prospects who have yet to make their debut. Also when it comes to a draft the Pirates have to have actually drafted and signed the player for him to count so Stephen Drew will not be making an appearance here. It is not necessary the player ever played for the Pirates either just that he was drafted or originally signed by them
First I'll provided a comprehensive but not exhaustive list of our options. The position is either the position they were drafted at or in the case of international free agents where they spent most of their first professional season.
C: Ryan Doumit, Steven Lerud, Neil Walker, Tony Sanchez
1B: Carlos Rivera, Steve Pearce
2B: Nate McLouth, Rajai Davis, Brock Holt
3B: Jose Bautista, Pedro Alvarez, Matt Hague
SS: Jeff Keppinger, Brian Bixler, Brent Lillibridge, Jordy Mercer, Chase d'Arnaud
OF: Nyjer Morgan, Andrew McCutchen, Alex Presley, Robbie Grossman
P: Bronson Arroyo, Mike Gonzalez, Joe Beimel, Jeff Bennett, Sean Burnett, Chris Young, Ian Snell, Zack Duke, Matt Capps, Paul Maholm, Tom Gorzelanny, Jonathan Albaladejo, Todd Redmond, Brad Lincoln, Jared Hughes, Michael Crotta, Daniel Moskos, Duke Welker, Tony Watson, Kyle McPherson, Justin Wilson, Vic Black, Phil Irwin, Brandon Cumpton, Gerrit Cole
The above is a list of players the Pirates have drafted and signed who still had some sort of baseball impact last season. It may have been the minor leagues or even independent ball but they were still playing. I'm not willing to call it a complete list but it should be very close. Of course the draft isn't the only way to acquire talent as it can also be done through international free agents. This list is much more difficult to obtain but I think I can at least hit the relevant guys. For the record this method will also hit domestic players who were signed as undrafted free agents.
C: Ronny Paulino
1B:
2B:
3B: Aramis Ramirez
SS: Jose Castillo
OF: Starling Marte
P: Juan Carlos Oviedo, Jason Johnson, Jairo Asencio, Romulo Sanchez
I think that pretty much should cover everyone now on to the task of assembling a 25 man roster. When it comes to position switches I am leaving open the possibility of keeping a player at his original position or moving him to another one that makes more sense. Below is my crack at the starting eight.
C: Tony Sanchez
1B: Aramis Ramirez
2B: Neil Walker
3B: Pedro Alvarez
SS: Jordy Mercer
LF: Starling Marte
CF: Andrew McCutchen
RF: Jose Bautista
The Pirates have quite a crop of 3B at their disposal here. Essentially 5 of our 8 starting eight could have been in some form or another considered a third baseman. The starting eight should look rather similar to what we have going into the upcoming season with the additions of a couple nice bats at 1B and 3B and an unproven catcher behind the plate. Now what about the bench ...
C: Ryan Doumit
CI: Steve Pearce
MI: Jeff Keppinger
OF: Nate McLouth
OF: Rajai Davis
In actuality the Pirates would probably opt to carry an extra infielder over one of Pearce, McLouth or Davis but I feel this gives the Pirates the best bench besides McLouth and Daivs both originally started out as 2B so in theory one of them could have been developed as a utility type. The starting rotation gets a little bit tricky:
1: Gerrit Cole
2: Bronson Arroyo
3: Paul Maholm
4: Justin Wilson
5: Todd Redmond
The first three spots were easy enough to fill but the last two are rather difficult. With a bullpen loaded with left handed pitchers it makes sense in this hypothetical situation that Wilson gets a crack at starting and Redmond prove to be rather servicable last year in a starting role in Toronto so in this exercise he edges out Brandon Cumpton for the fifth starter job. Now on to the bullpen.
CL: Tony Watson
SU: Matt Capps
SU: Mike Gonzalez
LH: Sean Burnett
MR: Vic Black
MR: Jared Hughes
LR: Brad Lincoln
Next to impossible to assemble a real bullpen but thats my best guess. Watson assumes the closer role and Capps stays along as the experienced closer with Gonzalez being the veteran lefty set up man. For the 3 middle releif jobs we add in another lefty (Burnett), a strike out pitcher (Black) and a ground ball guy (Hughes). We top it all off with a releiver who has shown himself capable of being effective over multiple innings.
As for how the rest of the guys shake out:
Top C Reserve: Ronny Paulino
Top MI Reserve: Chase d'Arnaud
Top OF Reserve: Robbie Grossman
6th Starter: Brandon Cumpton
Depth Starters: Chris Young, Phil Irwin, Kyle McPherson
Bullpen Depth: Zack Duke, Duke Welker, Juan Oviedo
It is a fun exercise to try and build some semblance of a team using just guys originally brought in by the organization. Now does this team represent an improvemtn on what the Pirates currently have? I think thats tough to say. That is one sweet lineup but the rotation and the bullpen look to be noticably weaker. What do you think would you take this theoretical team over the current crop or would you rather keep what we have?
I'd take current crop. Not even close IMHO. Aside from Cole, that is one lame starting rotation and bullpen. Great lineup though. Lots of 8-6 games--in both directions.
