Azulejos

By Veronica Lopez

Azulejos is a Portuguese and Spanish word that evolved from the arabic الزليج az-zulaiŷ or “polished stone”. This form of art and design was introduced in the Iberian Peninsula right after the Moors invasion around the year 711. It was mainly adopted by the Portuguese, and you can see that – at least in Lisbon – wherever you go: in castles, churches, residences. Besides the delicious Pastéis de Nata, what caught my attention when I visited Lisbon the azulejos as a reminder of Portugal’s beautiful history.
