China is requiring cosmetic companies to conduct animal testing in order to participate in their market. These tests are known to have cruelty-free alternatives, but for some reason China is still insisting the tests be done on animals. Unfortunately, many US companies are selling their goods in China. This means they are testing on animals, at least for that region. Among the companies that have been found by PETA to be testing on animals for the Chinese market and have been moved from their “List of Companies That DO NOT Test” to their “List of Companies that DO Test” are Estee Lauder and Revlon. I have not had a chance to do any thorough research on the details of companies that do and do not test or the exact requirements in China yet, but I am aware of the issue and feel I need to address it here. It is heart breaking to discover this information as Revlon was one of the few drug store companies that did not test on animals and Estee Lauder is the parent company of a large number of popular cosmetic companies. Recently there were plans for Urban Decay, one of my favorite brands, to enter the Chinese market and thus having to test on animals. Fortunately, I received word yesterday that they have changed their plans and Urban Decay will stay out of the Chinese Market for now should mean that they remain a cruelty-free company. Because of this development, the information regarding animal testing in some of my posts is no longer accurate and I am still trying to decide how best to remedy this problem. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome and I will do my best to correct the now inaccurate information as soon as I am able. Hopefully the Chinese government will soon change their policies and the products sold there will become cruelty-free. Until then, I will do my best to point out if a company or its parent company sells in China.
