Acne-Fighting: Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Sheet Mask Review

By Alyssa Martinez @ItsMariaAlyssa

Do you ever purchase a sheet mask version of your favorite serum or cream? Personally, I don't. Because most of the time, the serum is enough for me. But this one is the exemption because the Klairs Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop is one of my all-time favorite serum and I often use it for toner masking. So when Klairs launched a sheet mask version of their Midnight Blue line, of course, I have to try it. (Luckily, two shops sent me this sheet mask!) The serum made my skin brighter and lessen my dark spots. With continued use, it really improved my skin significantly. But, will the sheet mask do the same? Scroll down to read my Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Sheet Mask review.

WHAT IS IT?

Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Sheet Mask is specially designed to calm the skin with ingredients that decrease sensitivity. It contains low irritating and cooling ingredients such as Erythritol to rapidly lower the skin's temperature and reduce irritation. While the sheet mask itself is made with Bamboo Charcoal which is known to draw out bacteria and dirt and also helping to achieve a flawless complexion and fight acne. Charcoal is also a low irritant which makes it comfortable for sensitive skin and maintains moisture for a long time.

Recommended For:

  • For skin that is easily heated during irritation
  • For skin that feels clogged when applying oil products
  • For oily skin with active sebum secretion
  • For skin that frequently undergoes facial extraction

INGREDIENTS

Besides Erythritol and Charcoal, this sheet mask also contains Centella Asiatica Extract which is a known to promote wound healing. It also contains Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil and Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract which are both acne-fighting ingredients and my favorite ingredients in every anti-acne products. You can read more about its ingredient analysis in Skin Carisma.

But does this sheet mask have the same ingredients as the Midnight Blue Calming Cream or Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop?

Actually, this Midnight Blue Calming Sheet Mask has little in common with the Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop. It has more similarities to the Midnight Blue Calming Cream instead. You can see the side by side comparisons on the links below:

So if you're one of those people like me who are curious if the can replace their Youth Activating Drop with this sheet mask instead, the answer is NO because they're totally different products. And among the three products from the Klairs Midnight Blue line, the Youth Activating Drop has the least amount of ingredients which is only 10. Next is this Calming Sheet Mask which has 22, and then the Calming Cream has 47 ingredients, plus it has the most comedogenic ingredients among the three.

More ingredients, better skin care product?

Actually, the least the amount of ingredients in a skincare product, the better. It means the product is purer. So this sheet mask which has 22 ingredients, actually has the least ingredients compared to other calming and anti-acne sheet masks I ever used.

PERFORMANCE

APPLICATION: Before opening, rub lightly for the sheet and liquid to mix well. And then, after cleansing, place the sheet on clean/toned skin. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes, and gently remove the mask. Tap lightly to let the essence fully absorb.

SCENT: I can't exactly describe its scent but it smells soothing.

PACKAGING: The Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Sheet Mask is packaged in a matte packet which makes it easy to open with using scissors, but it is foil inside so the essence won't leak. And instead of one whole mask, this one is divided into two pieces. One for the upper half and one for the lower of the face which makes it fit more perfectly without creases.

FORMULA: Imagine a cotton pad soaked with the Klairs Supple Preparation Toner, that's what I think of the essence in this sheet mask, but thicker than I expected. Actually, of all the sheet masks I ever used so far, this one has the thickest essence.

RESULT: Another thing I didn't expect from this Midnight Blue Calming Sheet Mask is the slimy feeling it leaves after you removed the sheet mask. It wasn't tacky, just really slimy which takes a while to be absorbed into your skin. The first time I used this I was watching a World Cup match between Brazil vs. Mexico so I never noticed exactly how many minutes it took for the essence to be absorbed by my skin.

However, I absolutely love how this sheet mask hydrated, calmed and brightened my skin. Since I'm tuned in to FIFA World Cup matches which airs live around 10 PM and 2 AM in my country and ends around 4 AM, plus I just had a weekend trip where I did nothing but ate and drank alcoholic drinks for around 36 hours, it took a toll on my skin. It has become dull, dehydrated, and on a brink of breaking out. But this sheet mask rescued it!

This is the main reason why I call good sheet masks as a "beauty first aid" because it prevents almost (emphasis in almost, it means not everything) any skin problems you could think of. Because the water in sheet masks can make stronger ingredients more palatable to the skin as long as it is still soaked, so it can help with better delivery into the skin.

VERDICT

PROS: It effectively calms and hydrates the skin. It has a little brightening effect as well. Lastly, it contains ingredients that promote wound healing and acne-fighting.

CONS: It leaves a slightly slimy feeling, I don't totally hate it but it feels a little weird.
