While watching this past weekend’s Liverpool vs Newcastle, the commentator(I can’t remember his name) said something interesting. It was after Raheem Sterling’s bad tackle on Papiss Cisse. The commentator said that “Why is it that Sterling commits a foul and Liverpool get an advantage(Cisse off the pitch receiving treatment)? Sterling should have to go off until Cisse returns.”
I’d agree. It is wrong that a player gets fouled(and hurt) but his team goes 1 man down, while the player that committed the foul gets to stay on the field of play. Perhaps this should be implemented in the rules of Football.
From a cynical perspective, the least important outfield player of a team could intentionally foul and hurt the star player of the opposition, hence gaining the advantage of taking that star player out of the match for __ minutes – For example, with all due respect, Jack Colback takes out Hatem Ben Arfa just to gain the aforementioned advantage.
That said, on the whole, the big picture view should be taken and I’d strongly advocate that the relevant Football authorities seriously consider this concept/policy.
