Chevrons, also known as Zig-Zags, are inverted "V" shaped patterns. I believe the first chevron patterns were found in pottery thousands of years ago. Here are a few examples -- a salt cellar, water jug and a bowl crafted around 1800 BC. I'm not sure where these are from, but these patterns were found all over the world around this time period.
Zig-zags are a bold design element. I bet you have seen them on walls, rugs, curtains, furniture, accessories, etc., They can totally transform a room and become a focal point instantaneously. This pattern is full of life and there are a million ways to create zig-zags.
