Your Independence from Fat with a Very Personal Story

By Advsinwtloss @advsinwtloss
This is of course my second Independence day on Weight Watchers. A year ago I got my first "present" from my leader. She handed out those little toothpick American flags. She said "this is your independence from fat". I still have mine. It's a simple little thing, but it meant a lot to me at the time, still does.
I think it's a great way to look at weight loss. You're declaring your independence from fat. You're saying "Fat, I don't need or want you any more. You are no longer welcome". Which brings up something very personal that I want to share.
If you have to, think of fat as an abusive person. "You've made me feel miserable long enough. You've ruined my life for too long.". However, you allowing yourself to stay in that "relationship" is partly your fault. However, I know what it's like. I was in an abusive relationship for years. For the record it was NOT my ex-husband.
It was so hard to pull away from the abusive relationship and the old abused woman refrain "But I love him!" applied many many times. I could have become a statistic. However, I kept staying away from him, which was so hard because I'm from an area where everyone knows everyone so information travels. Like me not telling him where I moved and him showing up there. Yah. Nevertheless, I kept promising myself to be true to myself and be good to myself and to stay away because it was in my best interest. It took a very long time to finally sever the relationship, but I did. It was one of the most difficult things I have ever done in my 38 years. It's a cautionary tale that can apply to food and fat.
Be true to yourself. Don't go back to your old relationship with food. I know I abused myself with food for many years. Declare your Independence from fat. You don't need it in your life. You're better off without it. You may become a statistic if you don't get rid of it.
Happy Independence Day!
