But enough about that. What I want to talk about today is developing healthy habits, because I believe if you have your health you have everything. For me that means I’m trying to stay away from processed foods. I’ve increased my intake of fruits and vegetables and decreased my intake of carbohydrates and sugar.

In my opinion, sugar is an insidious detriment to our health and it is added to many processed foods. Did you know that sugar has the same effect on our brain as cocaine? This is rather unsettling don’t you think? So I’m trying to stay away from too much sugar. In my research I’ve found that sugar causes inflammation in our bodies and chronic inflammation can cause cancer. Here’s an article about the foods to avoid because they cause inflammation. So you see our diet is very important for our overall health.

I’m also stepping up my exercise routine. I go for hikes through the woods, because I love walking in nature and it relaxes me. I’m back to working with my free weights too, just to increase my overall strength. My bout with cancer has had a negative effect on my muscle tone and I’m trying to get that back.

Exercise is important even at the cellular level where cancer starts. Our cells perform better when we exercise. They get rid of their own waste better and perform their functions better. In my opinion, exercise increases the efficiency of our body.

Exercise is also a great stress reliever. Stress is another risk factor for poor health. So I’ve also worked into my healthy routine stress relieving activities. One of those is hiking. (I kill two birds with one stone with this one. :))

My other stress relieving activities are my writing :) and reading. Anything that’ll take me away from the stressful situation for a little while has a positive effect on my health.

I also feel that a positive mental attitude is important so I’ve been working hard on dealing with the negativity that can sometimes creep into our daily lives and turning it into something positive. After all, we want to spend as little time as possible wallowing in negative emotions, wouldn’t you agree?

So there you have it. My health regime. What are you doing to stay healthy? Share your ideas, I’d love to hear from you!
