I recently read Giovanna Fletcher's new book, (in 2 days) purely because I loved Billy and Me and I was super excited to see what she would do next... I was not disappointed.
You're the one that I want is brilliant. It takes you through every event you could possibly go through, as a boy, or a girl, from when you have your first crush, right up until you get your first steady partner - it is so relatable. I found myself looking back into my own little life and thinking about my own experience of falling in love *mushy* (love you Steve!). It takes you through stages that we have all experienced, and its this that helps you to empathise with the characters of Robert, Ben and Maddy.
I thoroughly enjoyed the structure of the book, having each chapter told alternately (almost) by either Maddy or Ben, and reading into both of their minds as they experienced the same situations at each different stage of their lives, from 9 years old onwards. There's also a little input every now and again from Robert, which is unclear what for at the beginning, but as you get deeper into the book you realize what he is talking about and it is such a clever way to deal with parts of the book.
There's nothing I love more than a book which has you pick a side, or pick the person you want the girl to end up with, and this is exactly what this book is all about - but no matter what way you want it to go, you are not disappointed. I really wanted it to go a different way to what it did (without revealing much) but I was still really happy with the resolution of the story when it got to the end - something which some authors really struggle to do is please all of their readers.
I definitely recommend this book as a summer holiday read, it is light, and can be a quick read especially if you're lounging by the pool!
