Yahoo says that hackers may have obtained the usernames and passwords for Yahoo accounts via a third-party database, since they can’t find any evidence of it being stolen directly from Yahoo’s systems.
“Our ongoing investigation shows that malicious computer software used the list of usernames and passwords to access Yahoo Mail accounts,” Yahoo’s Jay Rossiter explained in the blog post. “The information sought in the attack seems to be names and email addresses from the affected accounts’ most recent sent emails.”

As a result of this breach, Yahoo is resetting passwords for affected users and asks them to “never use the same password on multiple sites or services” again, as it makes you more vulnerable to hack attacks.
