- Xiaomi has demonstrated its own take on UWB technology.
- The company is showing a much easier way to control smart devices.
We've already seen Ultra Wide Band (UWB) technology introduced on the iPhone 11 series and Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. This opens the door to faster file sharing, smart locking / unlocking of doors, and mobile payment.
Now Xiaomi has released its own version of UWB on Weibo, showing a more intuitive way to control your smart devices around the home. Check out the video demonstration below.
Xiaomi's video shows an executive controlling devices such as Smart Light, Smart Display, Fan and Smart TV by simply pointing a phone at the devices. In other words, you don't seem to have to use an IR blaster or bluetooth.
The clip also shows how the phone's user interface automatically switches between different device control menus as the executive points to different smart home devices - you don't have to manually swipe to a specific device menu. Finally, the video clip from the Chinese brand also shows the locking / unlocking of doors. A smart lock automatically unlocks the door when the nearby phone is detected.
Xiaomi isn't the only company that has been promoting UWB technology in the past few weeks, as the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 2 offer the technology. Samsung also posted a blog post today detailing the current and future benefits of UWB in their phones.
The South Korean manufacturer says UWB technology allows for more precise features for nearby sharing and augmented reality to help you find your other Galaxy devices. Samsung adds that technology will soon make it possible to open your door when you approach it.
