Last April was noted by big red dot by jazz and blues lover. Wynton Marsalis, with his deep root in blues sound, collaborated with legendary guitarist Eric Clapton and performed together at Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York. This event remarks another attempt by Wynton Marsalis to perform together with other famous musicians.
This event, which was titled Wynton Marsalis & Eric Clapton Play the Blues, was dedicated to celebrate vintage blues and its influence in jazz music today. On that event the pair played ten blues compositions, ranged from traditional blues to boogie-woogie.
This special night was opened with “Ice Cream” a fast and fun composition, backed with Clapton’s vocal. Marsalis gave his trademark trumpet song to satisfy audience, and other band members such as Victor Goines (clarinet) and Don Vappie (banjo) also gave their best performance to cope with Clapton’s guitar. Clapton gave his trademark “howlin wolf” sound in “Fourty Four”. The pair played Dixieland blues on “Joe Turner’s Blues” which dominated by clarinet sound. They also played boogie-woogie on “Kidman Blues”. Marsalis dominated the stage when performed “Layla”, which was re-arranged with traditional blues touch. This event also supported by Taj Mahal who performed as special guest star, sang “Joliet Bound” and “Just a Closer Walk With Thee”. Marsalis-Clapton, together with Taj Mahal, closed this event with “Corrine, Corrina”.
On September Warner Bros released their performance in audio CD, CD+DVD and mp3 format for sale. Titled “Play the Blues Live from Jazz at Lincoln Center”, now you can purchase it online or on local music store.
