Wular Lake

Located at a considerable distance of about 50kms
from the capital city of Srinagar, the Wular Lake is sprawls over an outstanding area of about 200sqkms. Encircled by snow capped mountains and lush green forests, the Wular lake is truly a sight to behold. As per the legendary facts, Wular was a cave which witnessed the end of a city as it came under the influence of earthquakes and floods. Positioned at considerable distance of about 32kms northwest of the capital city of Srinagar, the Wular Lake is of prime tourism value.

Importance

Such is the magnificence of Wular Lake that it demands no specific introduction or mention. It is the largest fresh water lake in the continent of Asia. Sky scraping mountains surround the lake. The lakes are nourished by the melting snows from these mountains. People from far-off places come to witness this largest freshwater lake, thereby attracting tourists from all over the world. This boosts up the tourism industry. Besides, the Wular Lake presents a mesmerizing view to its visitors. 

Natural Features

Besides boasting about its beauty, the Lake is a haven for various species of flora and birds. The widespread swamps neighbouring the lake is a dwelling place for orchards, thick coniferous jungles and alpine grasslands. The presence of this greenery is a huge platform for the enrichment and development of the arena. The Wular Lake acts as a hibernating spot for various wandering waterfowl groups such as the Common Pochard, Little Egzet, Cattle Egzet and Shoveler. 

An uplift of the fish industry

The Wular Lake is one of the most important lakes of the Kashmir Valley. It is a haven for countless species of fish and it efficiently supplies over 60percent of the fish produce of the Valley. Some of the important species of fish found in the lake are, S. planifrons, S. micropogon, S. Longipinus, Cyprinus carpio, Barbus conchonius, Gambusia affinis and Schizothorax curvifrons. The Lake stands as a very important platform for more than 8500 fishermen.

Places to look around the Wular Lake

Is spite of witnessing the beauty of the Wular Lake, there are other places to look around the lake. Sopur The south end of the lake hosts Sopur, well known for its cultivation of fruits especially apples and walnuts. Lolab Valley & Bungas The Lolab Valley exists beyond Sopur. Pinpointed at a manageable distance of about 114km from the capital city of Srinagar resides widespread level grazing land called Bungas. Kiuhnus Bay Kiuhnus Bay is pinpointed at a considerable distance of about 12km from Bandipur. There are many waterfalls in the abounding areas. Bandipur To be found on the eastern side of the lake, Bandipur is extremely important for its huge storehouse of woven blankets. Shadipur Shadipur is well renowned as a camping and trekking center. Moreover, the place abounds with numerous fishes. Narmarg Narmarg is a very famed trekking hub around the lake. Henceforth, the Wular Lake is also a storehouse of many activities such as skiing, fishing, golfing, trekking and rafting. Best Time to Visit

One is always welcomed to visit the Wular Lake between the months of June-August. During these months, the atmosphere is cool and pleasent and more of all, the beauty of the lake is so heavenly that one can feel the bliss of heaven on earth.
