Would Hermione Be Better off a Potter Than a Weasley?

Nothing good comes from indecisiveness. When I think of my life, I reflect on all the different opportunities that have been presented to me in the past and imagine what my life may have been. After college I had a number of different opportunities including joining the Peace Corp, moving to Arizona to take a promotion at my job and using my connections in Ohio to secure another, more lucrative career path. However, I chose to move 1200 miles away to a town I had only visited once where I only knew 1 person to take a job that paid less than my current job and had an uncertain future due the recent passing of their founder and CEO.

Sound crazy? It may have been, but it was the right decision. I ended being introduced to a whole new career path that had not been available to me before, fell in love, and met new friends and acquaintances that have allowed me to grow beyond expectation. At the time all my options seemed equal with opportunities and uncertainties, but now I understand why I didn’t have much hesitation in taking this path.

Authors also are presented with a number of decisions in order to develop their stories from original plot lines. Did Tobias from Divergent need to be Divergent or could Veronica Roth have just made him an exceptional Dauntless? Did Prim really need to die in the Hunger Games trilogy?  What if Bella had chosen Jacob instead of Edward? OK, maybe that choice would not have really been an option.

Wonderland Magazine recently interviewed JK Rowling for her upcoming movie script Fantastic Beasts and Where They Come From. During the interview, Rowling touched on aspects of the Harry Potter story lines and divulged that she had second guessings regarding the viability of the relationship between Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley stating that Hermoine may have been a better match for Harry instead.

This is all Potter fans needed to hear in order to start an uproar online taking to blogs, Twitter, Facebook and even online publications calling for a retraction of her statements.

Teen ‏@teen  Ron who? Here are 8 other #HarryPotter characters Hermione would’ve been happier dating: http://www.gurl.com/2014/02/04/jk-rowling-harry-potter-hermione-dating/ … (via @gurldotcom)

@andpop  Sorry, J.K. Rowling, but we full heartedly believe Ron & Hermione belong together. #HarryPotter #Potterheads

‏@MTV  Are you team Hermione & Ron, team Hermione & Harry, or just team Hermione in general? #HarryPotter

Because of all the outrage and speculation that Rowling’s comments created, Mugglenet.com decided to go ahead and publish the entire article online so fans could get the full conversation.

When reading the full interview we see that these are just ponderings of an author who is looking back on choices she had available to her and having a little fun with the possibilities. The fact that she’s being interview by Emma Watson, who plays Hermione in the movie series, is most likely the reason it came up in the first place. Upon more pondering, Rowling does back track a little by saying:

“Oh, maybe she and Ron will be alright with a bit of counseling, you know. I wonder what happens at wizard marriage counseling? They’ll probably be fine. He needs to work on his self-esteem issues and she needs to work on being a little less critical.”

So what was my reaction when I heard that Rowling was thinking “Potter heresy”? I quote my email to a friend just a few hours after the news broke:

“She’s smoking crack because Harry and Ginny are the perfect couple even if Hermione and Ron aren’t. :)”

There you go. Just another avid fan’s opinion of a potential George Lucas moment. Truth be told, there probably are some better matches for Hermoine in the Potter series, but Hermoine and Harry have always had a sibling-type relationship and I found it refreshing in a literary world where a boy and a girl can’t just be friends for long (i.e. the Twilight love triangle, Hunger Games love triangle and Divergent love story) that they kept it platonic and remained life-long friends. Ultimately the right choice by Rowling.

Do you think JK Rowling should have changed the original plotline or are you happy with the way things ended in the Harry Potter Series?
